I lost 18lbs once I STOPPED doing cardio

Introduction to My Cardio Journey

Cardio has always been a significant part of many fitness routines, usually associated with effective weight loss. However, my personal experience challenges this common belief. Initially, I became obsessed with cardio not out of love, but because I was driven by a comment that made me self-conscious about my appearance. I was determined to shed weight through cardiovacular exercises, particularly by using an elliptical machine. Despite being an athlete for eight years, I wasn’t deeply fond of cardio.

The Cardio Misconception

My perception of cardio exercise was that it was the ultimate path to weight loss. I spent hours on the elliptical and the bike, hoping to see drastic changes in my physique. Unfortunately, my efforts were met with confusion and frustration, as significant weight loss never occurred. Despite long hours of cardio, inhaling ice cream seemed counterproductive. I soon realized that no amount of cardio could outdo a poor diet.

The Turning Point

Disillusioned by my lack of progress, I decided to discontinue my strenuous cardio regimen. This decision coincided with a transformative period in my life. My now-husband played a vital role in reshaping my dietary habits, highlighting the importance of diet over prolonged cardio sessions. With minor dietary adjustments, I witnessed substantial improvements in my weight.

Cutting Out Alcohol

The first major change in my diet was the elimination of alcohol. While I wasn’t consuming excessive amounts, the cumulative effect of occasional wines or weekend cocktails was significant. Cutting out alcohol led to immediate weight loss and it was financially beneficial. It’s clear to me that alcohol, which I candidly refer to as poison, doesn’t align with a healthy lifestyle.

Reducing Sugar Intake

Another crucial change was reducing my sugar intake. This wasn’t about completely abstaining from sugar but managing its consumption more intelligently. I continued to indulge in fruits and occasionally dabbled in sugar-free desserts, opting for healthier alternatives like dark chocolate. While I’m not fond of its taste, the reduction in sugar played a pivotal role in my weight loss journey.

Goodbye to Grains

Lastly, I removed grains from my diet. Items like bread, pasta, and rice were replaced with nutrition-rich alternatives like zucchini noodles and cauliflower-based products. This change wasn’t about strict dieting but finding healthier substitutes that didn’t leave me missing my favorite dishes.

Exercise Beyond Cardio

As I continued my fitness journey, I realized that exercise isn’t solely about cardio. The connection between exercise and health extends beyond weight loss. While cardio wasn’t the solution for me, general physical activities immensely benefited my overall health, mood, and well-being. It’s more about body movement and enjoying the process, which for me included weight lifting and setting personal records.

The Role of Exercise in Sustaining Weight Loss

Studies suggest that regular exercise isn’t just about losing calories but fostering a mindset of discipline and commitment. Exercise enthusiasts often exhibit traits of persistence and hard work, which are crucial in maintaining weight loss. The inherent physical activity also enhances one’s ability to recognize satiety, further aiding in weight maintenance.

Finding Enjoyment in Fitness

I have learned that enjoyment is central to a sustainable fitness routine. Many people, including myself at one point, view exercise as a tedious chore rather than a rewarding activity. Exploring fun physical activities that resonate with individual preferences can foster lasting commitment and health benefits.

Conclusion: Diet vs. Exercise

While diet is paramount in losing weight, exercise proves essential for holistic health. It’s about understanding and respecting one’s body, choosing effective dietary practices, and engaging in enjoyable physical activities. In essence, embracing a healthy lifestyle isn’t about conformity but about finding joy and satisfaction in the journey.
