When it comes to endurance training and general fitness, one of the factors that prevents men from obtaining their fitness goals is low energy. Low energy can be caused by various health concerns, such as low testosterone levels, depression, thyroid issues, or even iron deficiency. All men experience phases of low energy where the only activity that seems appealing is vegging out on the couch. This habit can turn into a long-term habit if it’s not rectified. An easy fix for this is incorporating some of these energizing foods into your diet.
1. Melons
Dehydration can leave you feeling tired and hazy. Studies have shown that mild dehydration (1.5% water loss) can have a big impact on energy levels. But drinking water and fluids is not the only way to stay hydrated. Certain foods, like melons, have a high water count. Watermelon is 90% water, which is an excellent way to gain hydration.
2. Oatmeal
Oatmeal is an excellent choice for breakfast, even when you wake up groggy and don’t feel like eating a big meal. Oatmeal is a source of complex carbohydrates, which provides glycogen. Glycogen is a sugar that is essential for brain and muscle functioning which will leave you feeling energized and ready for your day.
3. Nuts
Another food item that stabilizes and boosts energy is tree nuts. Tree nuts, such as walnuts and almonds, are packed with fiber and protein. These are a great post-workout snacks because they contain electrolytes, potassium, and sodium, all of which are great for muscle recovery and sustained energy.
4. Sweet Potatoes
Sweet potatoes are high-fiber carbohydrates. High fiber carbs help the body stabilize energy, just like nuts. These potatoes also provide a half day’s worth of potassium. Potassium is an electrolyte that provides hydration and energy.
5. Eggs
Eggs are known for their protein count, but they also provide iron and zinc. These minerals help generate energy. An egg contains 6 grams of protein, and protein helps build muscle and maintain blood sugar levels, helping you sustain your energy throughout the day instead of spiking it.
